Staatsolie is Suriname’s national oil and energy company. We are involved across the full oil and energy value chain. From exploration and drilling to production, refining, marketing and transport of crude oil and refined products. In addition, we generate electricity and support the development of local businesses and talent. Our integrated operations play a central role in meeting the country’s energy needs while contributing to economic growth and community development.
Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V. is a vertically integrated, state-owned company founded on 13 December 1980, with the Republic of Suriname as its sole shareholder. We operate as a commercial entity and, through our bylaws, also serve an institutional role. This institutional role is carried out by the Staatsolie Hydrocarbon Institute, acting on behalf of the State to assess offshore hydrocarbon potential, attract international oil companies, negotiate petroleum contracts, and monitor their execution. Staatsolie also holds participation interests in two gold mines operated by international companies.
Our subsidiaries strengthen Suriname’s energy sector through specialized services, including fuel retail, power generation and the management of international petroleum agreements. Each has a distinct role, while contributing to reliable energy and long-term value for Suriname.

Traces of oil have been found in the Nickerie district in the late twenties of the previous century. It is only forty years later, before oil is really found in the Saramacca district. And it takes another twenty years before the national oil industry starts to develop.
