The Children’s University of Suriname is an educational initiative that introduces science and technology to children aged 6 to 12 in a playful and accessible way. The project was developed to give children, including those outside Paramaribo, more equal access to enriching learning experiences in science, technology and higher education. By bringing scientific themes closer to the daily lives of children, the programme helps reduce educational and digital inequality from an early age.
The project consists of blended learning workshops offered both in person and digitally. Through these sessions, children are encouraged to ask questions, collaborate and explore topics such as coding, microbiology, financial education and the Sustainable Development Goals. The workshops are facilitated by university alumni and supported by educational materials that are tailored to the Surinamese context and the experiences of young learners.
Staatsolie Foundation supported this project with a contribution of USD 23,100 for educational materials and mobile children’s workshops. The programme aimed to stimulate interest in higher education and science among approximately 3,600 children, regardless of socio-economic background or ethnicity.
By supporting Stichting Kinderuniversiteit Suriname, Staatsolie contributes to stronger educational opportunities for children and helps nurture curiosity, critical thinking and creativity. The project fits within Staatsolie’s broader commitment to social investment, especially initiatives that improve access to education and help young people develop skills for the future.
